subscription price of boys' life to increase

Subscription Price of Boys' Life to Increase; Excellence to Continue

It has been seven years since Boys' Life magazine has seen an increase in
its subscription price, but the inevitable rises in paper, prices, postage
rates, and production costs have led to a rise of 10 cents per issue,
effective September 1, 1997.

The monthly rate will be 75 cents, and the annual Scout subscription rate
will become $9.00. (The non-Scout fee will be $18.00 for 12 issues.) The
cover price (single-issue sale) will rise to $3.00.

This fee increase is well below the youth magazine industry subscription
average. For example, Highlights for Children, which sells for $29.64 for
12 issues, has increased its rate 48.5 percent since 1990, compared with
this 15.4 percent increase (10 cents per issue) for Boys' Life. A
comparison of youth magazines show that Boys' Life is still the best buy in
the youth magazine market.

Another factor in this price increase is the fact that since September
1995, Boys' Life has been publishing two demographic versions -- one for
Cub Scouts and one for Boy Scouts. These two versions have been successful
in promoting the Scouting program and bringing it into the lives of more
youth. However, the added pages necessary for these versions incur
significant extra editorial and production costs.

Boys' Life continues its record of editorial excellence. Recently, the
Community Action network recognized it with the 1996 Media Award for
Exceptional Merit -- just one more of many editorial excellence awards the
magazine has earned over the years.

The most important recognition, however, comes from the readers. Young
Scouts stay in Scouting longer because Boys' Life is a part of their lives,
families are more supportive of Scouting because the magazine is in their
homes each month, and Scout subscribers advance in rank more quickly and
more often than Scout nonsubscribers.
