Re: A Cautionary School Night Tale

I believe that holding the Round Up during the first few days of school
is not good, for both Scouts and for parents. Kids are trying tosettle
into the new routines as are parents with homework.
As for schools getting flyers out, my son's elementary school has a
designated day (Monday) on which folders containing graded papers, notes
from teachers, newsletters, and fliers are sent home. Parents learn to
expect all correspondence on this same day each week. Some teachers
will only send papers home on that day, but a few will send home
whatever happens to be in their mailbox on other days. Even with P.T.A.
fliers, these must be in teachers' boxes before noon on Friday to ensure
they go out on Monday.
We do need to realize that the schools are doing a favor for Cub
Scouting by distributing these fliers and that we should do anything we
can to help the staff, i.e., have fliers counted and sorted by grade and
teacher, offer to place them directly in teachers' boxes or carry them
and personally hand them to teachers before or after school hours. This
can be done by a pack parent who has children attending the school.
The essential item, though, is to give parents enough time to plan to
attend the meeting. I don't believe your district planning to send
fliers out on Tuesday for a Wednesday meeting is enough time.
