Today, I received a letter from Frank Reigelman, Philmont's Director of
Program, that appears to have been sent to the "contact person" for all
1998 Philmont expeditions. Here is a portion of the letter:
"We have placed a major emphasis on physical fitness for participants.
Philmont's height/weight standards are on the back of this page and have
been ridgedly enforced this summer. It is important that you review
these standards now and share them with your crew and their families so
any individual exceeding the 'maximum acceptable' limit will have time
to safely begin a weight loss and conditioning program."
Enclosed with the letter is a sheet titled, "Philmont Height/Weight
Standards for Backpacking & Hiking." This sheet states, "Those who
exceed these limits cannot be permitted to backpack or hike in the
Philmont backcountry."
Here are the limits in lbs. as stated on the chart:
Height Limit
------ -----
5' 0" 166
5' 1" 172
5' 2" 178
5' 3" 183
5' 4" 189
5' 5" 195
5' 6" 201
5' 7" 207
5' 8" 214
5' 9" 220
5' 10" 226
5' 11" 233
6' 0" 239
6' 1" 246
6' 2" 252
6' 3" 260
6' 4" 267
6' 5" 274
6' 6" 281
6' 7" & over 295
There is also a note that the maximum weight for Horse Cavalcade Treks
and horserides is 200 lbs.
I believe this makes it quite clear...Philmont will enforce the weight
limits in 1998. They are communicating this now so everyone knows "up
front" what the limits will be. BE PREPARED!
