Another Scrounging tip

Bob Costello (bobc775@HOTMAIL.COM)

Another tip that comes to mind that seems obvious to many,
but is one of the easiest to overlook... former Scouts and
Scouters.

I do quite a lot of work with Cub Scouts, having been a Den Leader
on Roundtable Staff, and presently a Cubmaster. One of the things
that happens in Cub Scouts that happens less (to some degree) in
Boy Scouts is regular turnover of leaders. Each year one or two
Den Leaders leave the pack to follow their sons to Boy Scouts.
With them go Powow books, Program Helps, Leftover Craft materials
great ideas, scrap wood, and the like.

I have taken to calling them at the start of the new school year
and asking them what they might have that a new leader could
use. As a result, my basement looks like either a disaster area
or a treasure trove of valued scouting material (depending on
whether you are talking to my wife or me).

Another business to check is printers. They will frequently have
leftover card stock that they will give away to anyone who asks.
Our church has been the recipient of hundreds of pounds of paper
every year.

One for you Girl Scout leaders, or Boy/Cub Scout leaders who melt
wax (parafin) to make fire-starters. Talk to your local churches.
Each year they go through dozens of tapirs for various observances.
They usually only burn down about 1 or 2 inches before they are
replaced for new shiny ones, and are excellent when melted to make
buddy burners, egg carton starters, waterproof matches and the like.

As was said in a previous post....never hesitate to ask, the
worst that will happen is someone will say no.
