Advancement recognition

Doug,
I recommend advancement instruction continue up to the rank of First
Class. This should not dominate but be a routine part of the meeting.
Merit Badge classes have no place at a Troop meeting. First Class
Scouts and above require leadership training and practice. Perhaps
these older boys can run the instruction for the new scouts and the
adults perform as B-P intended.
Fortunately I had a SM who followed the SM Handbook--the 1911 edition-
-and my youth experience was exceptional.
I am a firm believer in instant recognition with a recap at a formal
COH. Or present the badges of rank a second time--the boys won't
mind.
So glad there's a real question like yours and not another patch
trading one.
(For the record I did not trade one patch or hat pin at the
Jamboree!)
Happy Scouting,
