<Council has recently sent out a dictate that camp nicknames
(like "Flamingo" or"Pooh Bear") are no longer permitted>
John:
I have not seen or heard this, but it dosen't mean it doesn't
exist. Why might something so (seemingly) silly be true? Let's
think about the "Scouting is a Safe Haven" philosophy.
If the person says "My name is Fillmore, but you can call me
Goober", then I would suggest Goober is ok. Should I choose to
call the person Goober cause I think he acts like one, then
Scouting is no longer a Safe Haven, and the nickname is wrong.
You happen to overhear me referring to this person by the
nickname. How do you know which of the above cases applies?
Perhaps this is the (slightly authoritarian) way the BSA is
attempting to insure that Scouting remains a Safe Haven for all?
I doubt all nicknames will vanish. What will probably vanish are
the nicknames someone gets tagged with, without consent. This is
not a bad thing. (and no, I'm not telling you my nickname :-) )
