I know we've kicked this horse to dust, but I think there's one item we may
have missed here. We have heard over and over that "on appeal" a scout
holding title to a job is good enough for National. So we've started
thinking about how to remove a scout from a job he isn't fulfilling to our
expectations.
Aren't we overlooking the obvious? Shouldn't we be concentrating on how to
TEACH this young man how to do the job? A Scoutmaster's first and foremost
job is to teach junior leaders. This discussion has narrowed down to how to
remove the scout, when it's the SM who truly has failed.
The way to prevent this is shown in the JLT and SMF courses. First, you
make sure the Scout knows what he is supposed to do. Second, let him do it!
Third, evaluate his performance. This is an on-going process. You don't
wait until the six month term is up then tell the scout he didn't do what
you wanted. For those of you WB trained you'll remember it as "Effective
Teaching," and recall that it is cyclical with frequent, if not constant,
evaluation.
Of course there will always be boys that simply can't do the job, but
instead of putting so much effort into removing him from office for his
failings, lets put that effort into refusing to allow him to fail.
I'll step down now.
