Almost Free Philmont Trek Opportunity

John E. Bush (jbush@OKWAY.OKSTATE.EDU)

Friends,

Thanks to everyone who responded to my postings yesterday about the
Philmont weight limitations. There were many very helpful comments and
suggestions.

I did pursue another solution suggested by a local former Philmont
staffer. He said it is sometimes possible to "rent a ranger." In that
situation, the ranger would go along with the trek for the full
distance, not just the first day or so. I called Philmont and inquired
about that. The lady I spoke to said that it was unlikely to be
possible. They just aren't staffed up to provide such a service very
often. Another gentleman is supposed to call me back for further
information, though.

Therefore, we REALLY need another over 21 year old registered Scouter to
go on the trail with our crew. So much so that we are willing to cover
the full cost of the Philmont registration, transportation, meals on the
way there and back, etc., for a suitable person. I know we have
Scouters from Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Bartlesville, Enid, and Wichita on
SCOUTS-L. You would be great candidates because you live close enough
to come visit with our crew and parents to see if the "match" is
suitable. We'll want to work references as well.

If you are interested in a FREE (almost) Philmont trek, or know someone
who might be, please contact me directly. (Don't reply to the list!)
We will leave from Stillwater, Oklahoma, on July 21 and return on August
4. We need someone with backpacking experience, who can pass the
Philmont physical requirements including the weight limitation, and who
has current certification in CPR and First Aid.

I will be glad to provide further details directly to anyone who is
interested. If you want to call, my home phone is (405)372-6914 and my
office phone is (405)744-6897. My e-mail address is
jbush@okway.okstate.edu.

Thanks again,
John Bush
