A Good Night for Troop 14

Richard C. Ickler (icklerr@SOCA.COM)
Tue, 24 Jun 1997 19:15:39 -0700

I am very proud to announce that Troop 14 had two Eagle Board of Reviews
last night. Our joint SPLs (a different long story) both finished their
Eagle trail together after beginning together in Pack 14 ten years ago,
one in Den 1 and the other in Den 6. Both would certainly appreciate a
note of congratulations. They are Gregory Wilterink and David Ickler.
Both boys are almost 17 and will be Seniors in High School next year.
(Yes, David is my #2 son, first Eagle son). They join the ranks of
about 60 since the Troop started their trophy in the early 60's. Troop
14 is the second oldest troop in the Council. We don't know for sure
the full tenure, but we know the troop was founded before 1920 and has
been continuously chartered since that time except for a break of about
6 months in 1942 because of lack of leaders. Unfortunately, they will
be the last for at least a year because the next highest ranking scout
is First Class (the average age of the troop right now is probably 12).

Relating to the recent discussion, they were about the last Eagles under
a system where the District Advancement Committee chaired the Board but
the Troop supplied 3 members and the facility. They are going to a
District or Council board (I'm not sure which) and unfortunately the
transition is not being well received. Both of the District Advancement
Committees (there are 2 districts in this council) are apparently
resigning enmasse at the end of the month because they don't want any
part of it. For what it's worth, Long Beach is most certainly "urban"
but it is a small and shrinking Council though still quite healthy
financially.
