The timing of Tom Petrik's message is interesting. Two of our Scouts was in
the Local Sunday Paper. They where in an area of a bad car accident and
reacted immediately to help the hurt victims involved. The Highway Patrol
says they may have saved some lives.
National has nominated Nick and Steven for the Medal of Merit.
The article with Nicks picture is on the net. Go ahead and read it, I think
it was written very well and Nick and Steven would be honored. Here is the

What the article doesn't say is Nick's story is the same story of some
Scouts that we discuss on the Scout_L. He is an example of a boy who you
would never think as Eagle Scout material. He is the boy that some say
needed Scouting the most. He required a great deal of patience from the
adults and the Scouts in his Patrol. On top of that he has a heart defect
that prevents him from many Troop activities.
Last January Nick thought he would be elected the next SPL (I don't know
why). He did not get nominated for SPL or anything other position. That
hurt him a lot but he made a decision to turn his life around and start
earning the respect that a SPL deserves. He also decided to get his Eagle
at the age of 14. He is now one our hardest working Scouts.
I made sure I was on his Life Board of Review last week to tell him how
proud I was to be in the same Troop with him. Not because of the Medal of
Merit (we didn't know about it last week) but because he decided to make
something of himself at a time when he was tearing himself down. Nick
represents why we all are involved with Scouting.
Last Night at our Court of Honor, Nick's dad got up and gave full credit to
the Troop Leadership for Nick and Steven's behavior. After all the hard
work we put in this Troop and these Scouts, I wanted to agree, but I know
that the truth is these young men deserve full credit.
