I agree with Jeff on this one. There is no prohibition from using
service to a Pack as your advancement service hours (of course, not
including Eagle.) We also encourage our boys to find other
organizations (their own Church, or School, etc.) to perform their
service hours for.
One thing that our committee has begun discussing this month... If a boy
does his service to the Pack at the Pinewood Derby, he can accomplish
*all* of his service in one day. This has become very common in our
Troop. The boys do all of their service at once and then are unwilling
to give service at any other time. One solution which we've been
considering is to allow the boys to use only one or two hours of service
per event. For instance, if they wanted to work at the Pinewood Derby
(which this year lasted six hours, from check-in to the last race) they
could only use two hours toward the six required for Star or Life. This
would, in essence, force them to find at least three service projects on
which to work. Ideas??
