Re: Summercamp Home Sickness

There are several reasons that homesick kids go home during the week and
the most common one is that the leaders don't pay attention to what is
going on in the campsite. At our summer camp we have program all day and
into the evening with the last activity -a Nighthawk swim starting at 930
pm. The pool also has flush toilets to handle the bathroom issue.
However, leaders also need to watch how the boys are treating each other
and if someone is getting picked on because he's the new kid. That starts
a lot of "homesickness" too. I've worked the Health Lodge at our camp
since 1989 and most of the time we get down to the issue of how the boy
is being treated in his campsite. So we send him off with a staff
member, get him involved in doing something special, pay lots of
attention to him, say hi everytime we see him and the campsite host may
make a couple extra visits to the campsite or the program director or
camp director may pay them a complimentary visit to try to identify
situations that need correcting. Harassment is not allowed and if that
is what is happening we take steps to correct it. However, the best way
to keep boys from getting homesick is to keep them so busy they don't
realize the week is past and of course if the dining hall serves food on
the menu that doesn't allow constipation to become a problem everyone
can have a fun week.
