Sorry for using your space Marc, but I seem to have misplaced the
originator of this subject. Here in the sportsman dream of Stevens
District, we have two basic types of Eagle BOR. First off, it is the SM
who initially approves the Eagle Project-but, before the lad starts
working on said project it was be blessed by the district advancement
Commish. It is also the district advancement Commish who must verify the
satisfactory completion of the project before an Eagle BOR is set-up.
Now for the Eagle BOR. For those boys from LDS troops, the members are
made up of LDS Scouters & a Bishop, plus a district rep-generally, the
advancement Commish. For non-LDS troops, the Eagle BOR is made up of
Scouters from throughout the district, plue a district rep., generally
the advancement Commish. In both cases the SM IS NOT a member of the
BOR, however he is the 1st person to be called to face the 7-person BOR
& brief the members on the lad in so far as Scouting is concerned. Next
are the parents, parent, or guardian for a look at the whole boy outside
of Scouting. Only then is the candidate for Eagle called & he better be
in uniform. Neither the parents nor the SM are allowed to sit in on the
board.
The weakness within our system is the amount of power allowed to one
person, the district advancement Commish-if he does not like the boy in
question, he can cause problems for the boy.
The differece between the LDS & non-LDS BOR are only in the eyes of the
beholder. My boys, although not Morman, are in LDS troops. They believe
the LDS BOR more difficult because to them, a bishop is a bishop & you
have to study & try harder not to upset him, he is too close to God.
Besides, there is always cake after a BOR.
