Hi! I was stationed at NS Rota from January of 1982 to late October of 1985.
Troop 73 was one of 3 troops on base at the Camp Columbus boy scout area
adjacent to the Seabee compound. I was a district committee member-at-large
during my tour of duty at Rota, and I filled the position of liaison with
the two Spanish Scouting movements in Andalucia that were recognized by the
World Organization of the Scouting Movement (WOSM).

The troops all used to have food booths at the 4th of July celebration and
they did periodic car washes at the flight line.

Also, we had the fall camporee at Camp Columbus in October in honor of
Christopher Columbus and his epic voyage. During the four years I was
there, we invited the Spanish Scouts to participate. Subsequently, a
Spanish scouter friend of mine told me that the BSA dropped out of
contact with the Spanish Scouts. The spring camporee we held near Madrid
in "El Valle de los Caidos" (The Valley of the Fallen), a Spanish civil
war monument and park. At the fall camporee, we and the Spanish Scouts
(both ASDE and MSC; see below) hiked the Columbus Trail from el Castillo
de San Marcos to Camp Columbus, about 7 miles.

Every 2 years, we participated in the "Campamento de San Jorge" in April,
that was hosted by the Scouts de Espana. San Jorge is rendered as St.
George in English, and is the patron saint of the Boy Scouts.

If the BSA at NS Rota has fallen out of touch with the Asociacion de
Scouts de Espana (ASDE) and El Movimiento Catolico de Scouts de Espana
(MSC) and if you would like to renew contact with them, two contacts are:

ASDE - Francisco J. Armada Munoz (Nickname: Paco)
TEL 89 02 98
Lives in the city of San Fenando in Calle Manuel de Falla
has a son and a daughter in Scouting, and he and his wife
are both Scouters (or were, the last time I talked with him).
Speaks very limited English. His daughter participated in the
World Jamboree in 1995 in the Netherlands as part of the
Spanish contingent.

MSC - Miguel Vazquez
Lives in El Puerto de Santa Maria. Was a Spanish Civil Service
interpreter in the employ of the U.S. Navy at Rota. He is probably
retired now and may not be active in Scouting anymore, but could
put you in touch with the MSC.

I hope that the foregoing is of some assistance to you.

Also, how much does an account with AIRCADIZ.NET cost? When I last talked
with Paco, he said it was very expensive. Depending upon the cost, I was
thinking of getting a 3 to 6 month subscription to an on-line service for
his family as a thank-you for many kindnesses over the years.

Yours in Scouting,

Rodger
