Kevin,

I believe I would have done the same as you, but you are right that it is
a difficult situation.

There is more than one way to take care of them. Even though you are new
in the area, you could have enlisted the aid of neighbors. Would be a good
way to meet them. Surely the youths knew neighbors as well. You could have
had witnesses and still cared for the boys. I don't think you did anything
wrong at all, but if you are concerned about protecting yourself, a little
extra effort could have provided the boys with temporary shelter and you
with protection. I think it is sad that Good Samaritans are being driven
into apathy by a witchhunt mentality. Good on you for caring.
