ADMINISTRATIVE: Posting Guideline Reminder

Jon Eidson (eidson@UNIX4.IS.TCU.EDU)

Hi all ...

As we all approach our summer time schedule (summer camp, day camps,
Philmont, etc.) many need to be reminded of postings guidelines:

- The BEST guidelines in ALL postings is to abide by the Scouts Oath
and Promise. It is valid to discusss ideas and to disagree
but NEVER on a personal level.

- Dont quote messages when replying
- Use private email whenever possilbe (congratulations, welcome, etc.)
- Keep length of lines 72 characters or less
- Keep signature lines reasonable in length (4-5 lines max)
- Keep topics limited to scouting and youth programs
- Dont use MIME (ie attach files, notes, etc)
- No commercial advertising
- Learn how to use your email software so you dont make mistakes

If you have misplaced your copy of the WELCOME file, you can get
a new one by sending email to "LISTSERV@tcu.edu" with a one line
message (no signature lines) that says "GET SCOUTS-L WELCOME".

Recently I've been realizing the magnatude of the quantity of postings
SCOUTS-L generates. With well over 2,200 subscribers x 50 messages
per day is at least 100,000 delivered messages per day. This is
over 1,000,000 in less than 2 weeks! There are a lot of resources used
when a posting goes out. It is easy for the quality of such a large
group to break down, but I think SCOUTS-L has been very good about
maintaining its high standards: mostly due to the quality of our
subscribers but also in our postings guidelines. Thank you for adhearing
to them.

Thanks again for listening.

Yours in Scouting,
Jon Eidson, Listowner Scouts-L

PS. I'll be at Philmont Trek 616-D. This makes my 9th visit to
Philmont (2 as pre-cub w/parents, 4 treks, 3 PTC). Gotta love the
place :)
