Good afternoon, Tobias and good morning everyone else!! I have FINALLY got
my "mounds 'o paper and boxes and file cabinets" down to something that I
can deal with, so I took this brief break (actually, I'm waiting for the
coffee to finish brewing *laughter*) to post and let everyone know that I'm
STILL around and as soon as things get put away, I'll be back daily to join
everyone here!!
Let me answer Tobias' questions first, and then I'll post a followup to
explain the LONG delay.....
Tobias, Scouts-L is a mailing list, one of several Scouting-related lists
that have been blossoming here on the Internet since the middle part of 1993.
But Scouts-L....this list....is the great granddaddy of them all. This
list was created not so much to talk about Boy and Girl Scouting programs
(which the vast majority of readers, posters and printers are associated
with), but rather to discuss youth programs and operations of ALL kinds. So
why don't we call it "Youth-L?"....that name was already taken, and the
orginators of the list were all involved in some sort of Scouting program,
so Scouts-L was natually selected as the name of this group.
We also encourage and have read postings and questions from others not
involved in this nation's two leading youth programs....we have people here
from church Scout groups (that is, programs organized by church bodies which
follow some or a great deal of the Boy or Girl Scouting program but which
are NOT BSA or GSUSA chartered programs...programs like Royal Rangers and
Missionettes and Awana), from Big Brother/Big Sister, 4-H, Junior
Achievement, and local youth programs. There's also some people here that
read Scouts-L whom are associated with city or county or community
recreation programs as well.
Add to that some 15 other countries (including Germany)' Scouting programs,
Ray's postings from the World Scouting Bureau, and postings from those
interested in forming youth programs in their communities, and you have some
idea of the scope of our friendly little group, which we have come to know
as the "International Roundtable meeting which NEVER ends!"
The "actual subscription list" reads at somewhere around 1000 (I haven't
been here in three weeks, Tobias, so I'm not sure if we've lost some folks or
gained more...), but that doesn't include folks like yourself that reads our
list through local BBSes, forums like yours, and via summaries found on the
Internet....including all of those resources, we're looking at somewhere
around 3000 or so. That makes Scouts-L a viable but NOT the ONLY resource
available to youth leaders.
Because some of Scouts-L's topics and discussions needed to be more indepth
than the short (ten day mostly) period here, several other mailing groups
have been created and are florishing as the time went onward. The first of
those "branch groups" was Arrow-L, to focus on the Boy Scouts of America's
Order of the Arrow national honorary; other groups with topics that demanded
more time and which detracted from "daily talk" here included WAGGS-L,
Patch-L, and several religious youth group lists.
All of those lists started as onward discussions here on this group,
Tobias....we're proud of ALL of them, and we're NOT in competition with any
of them...there's space and room around the "grand campfire" for everyone,
and when there's no more room, we'll start another "grand campfire". One
of the most interesting things about this all has been that when folks need
to share news, somehow the news gets carried to those other
groups.....that's a positive statement supporting my "my groups better than
your group" statement. We're all in this to better our programs and in
return, our youth together...those things, like so many other "distractors",
quickly leave once you're here!
WELCOME to your group members and to yourself...take some seats somewhere
around, get to know us as *people* not just "participants",
and post and ask away and answer if you can or desire to. Let us all know
something about your youth program background, and by all means continue to
spread the word about this forum and the resources it can add to your local
program!
