G'day all,
I've deleted most, just to let my view, as a Australian be know...
>> as well as Boy Scouts. Considering I'm 21 and single and don't have
>> any children, I was wondering if people would worry about me helping out a

I deleted the response of Mark by accident,....however...
I can say, quite openly on the list, that here in Australia, this would not
be a problem. In fact, if James want to migrate to Australia and become my
assistant Cub Leader, please do so *now!*
I was a assistant Cub leader, single and helping at cubs. At 18. As soon as
I turned 21, I became the Cub Leader (or Cub Masters as you BSAers call them)
I am now married, 25, still no children of my own and still the Cub Leader
(Cub Master of a pack...
I know several 21 year olds, both male and female, who are below 25 years
of age and running sections (this includes Joeys, Cubs and scouts) by
themselves, or with others. Often the yonger ones are the leader in charge.
There doesnt seem to be such a big stigma here about this sort of thing. I
know that it can and probably has happened. But, we have a high parent
apathy here...not in all groups, but in some areas, we have extreamly low
parent involvement and I know that if I was to leave as a Leader, the pack
would fold. Heck, we cant even get parents to serve on the parent
committee, let alone become leaders and we have honestly tryed everything
in the book, including not letting the kids come and stuff and they still
keep droping the children of each week.
While I realize that this is Australia and you are going to be dealing with
the American thing which is totally different, all I can say is go for it.
Dont wait untill you have a son of your own. There has to be a way...
