I concur with your analysis. In addition, I might note the dilution of the
camp fire gasses before inhalation as opposed to a determined effort to
concentrate tabacco smoke during inhalation bears some consideration. As a
Service manager and ASE Master Certified Technician (wish I COULD play one
on TV) I am quite concerned about CO and other gasses in my shop. However,
it seems that I am not as concerned as some others, namely one of my techs
who does smoke.
Now in Florida, we have hardly any days in which the shop is closed up, in
fact we have very decent ventilation. Still this tech just can't stand to
have a car running anywhere in the shop. He has no problem smoking next to
me, mind you, just with a vehicle running in the shop.
To my mind, there is little harm a car fifteen feet away can do to me. The
CO an NOx levels are pretty diluted by the mass of air that circulates
within the shop. Its just plain ol' logic and physics.
So what's the catch??? Well, most of what we believe about smoking is
apocryphal at best. Very seldom do we make decisions based on the "facts"
but rather on anti or pro sentiments. Its the old adage, "Don't confuse me
with the facts because my mind is already made up". That's the way it is
with any emotionally charged issue, and That's the way it will stay. So
what do we do? Agree to disagree? That could work for me, I am not too
evangelistic when it comes to anti-smoking anyway. Each of us has to come
to grips with what we are willing to sacrifice for Scouts and with what
example we want to provide. I think my non-smoking is a GREAT example. I
just wish my forgetfulness or impetuousness would be just as sterling. We
all have plusses and minuses, and I would suggest (as one religious leader
did long ago) that the one among us without any flaws be the one to throw
the first stone. As for me, I think I will take a look at the man in the
mirror... and maybe try to change HIM a bit.
