Don,

This issue is about more than just the smoking. Smoking is only an
example. The real isue hs to do with leadership by adults. Again, the
key to effective leadership is example. How many times do we see the
adults who use questionable language around the scouts. Leaders who
preach the uniform gospel but don't have a complete shirt. Look around at
those who profess boy leadership as long as it is only adult ideas. We
see others who will take any boy into their troop as long as he is easy
to get along with and chase away the troublesome ones. I could go on at
length (and already have) on this subject. The scouts are not blind and
see right through us when words fail to match actions.

The sad part about it is that when we try to fool them we only fool
ourselves. Even sadder are those cases where folks have so deceived
themselves that their own rationalizations for their actions have become
the truths in their lives.
