Signing On To SCOUTS-L

To All:

It's been months now that I've known of and even dabbled in the Scouts-L
list server. Mostly I've been "kept in touch" via specific emails from one
of the Den Leaders in our Pack--especially when he's found something
particularly poignant or otherwise interesting. But now that I've managed
to convince my better half that this machine is absolutely necessary for our
daily survival... I FELL LIKE I'VE ARRIVED!

My name is Mike Hicks and I am both a scout from not too, too long ago and a
scouter today. As a youth, I made it through Star Scout before "other
things" took precedence, as you can imagine. I had some very wonderful
years in the scouting program as a youth, but it was amazing to me how much
of that fun I had forgotten until my son got involved about five years ago.
When my son joined Cub Scouting as a Wolf Scout, I slowing got involved
until I was absolutely HOOKED! And today I am happily involved in our Cub
Pack, as the Cubmaster; I am the Cub Roundtable Commish for our district;
and I am a member of my son's Troop Committee. In my spare time, I've had
the pleasure of attending Woodbadge (NE-CS-54) and am currently working my
ticket "as I can." And when I'm all finished those minor tasks each
evening, I then try to devote a little time to other things, like Learning
For Life.

In addition to my Scouting activities, I do hold down a job as an
Engineering Manager and I also try to keep involved with my family's other
pursuits, such as my wife's career as a world-class harpist (who was one of
two US citizens invited to compete in the 1994 International Harp
Competition in Jerusalem, Isreal--but I'm not bragging!); my daughters' like
intentions in playing their harps; my older daughter's activities in high
school and with horseback riding; and helping out with "Loppie" the rabbit,
"Chestnut" the guinea pig, "Bob" the iguana, and "Lucy" the dog!

Now, about our Pack--'cause it's the greatest!!! We are located in
south-central PA in the small, but expanding borough of Stewartstown. Our
home page is found at www.cyberia.com/pack27. The pack just recharter in
January with 108 active boys and, I think, 35 scouters. We have an
extremely active program with 10 dens--2 just crossed over to the local
scout troops. We have a blast at this thing called Cub Scouting and I hope
I never have to leave it! I've been the Cubmaster here for 3 years, going
on 100, but they haven't threatened to fire me yet. Of course, the real
reason that our program is as good as it is is because of all the wonderful
people in the pack who really do make it happen. Scouting in Stewartstown
is also a family activity--not just an activity for families, but an
activity that makes us a bigger family. And it's done just that--building
and binding friendships throughout the community. (You can't go anywhere in
town without running into another friend from the Pack or Troops!)

I am glad to be on the list server and hope to collect and share ideas about
the Scouting program. I will leave with one question... has anyone
attempted to make an on-line roundtable handout--one that others can add to
as they get thoughts on upcoming themes? I would love to have access to and
share in such an effort. Please let me know if there's something like it on
line.

Thanks and thanks for having me...
Mike Hicks
Pack 27 Cubmaster, Cub Roundtable Commissioner, and Troop 27 Committee Member

the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... But the world
may be different because I was important in the life of a child."
