Our troop has a unique tradition for campouts. We recieved a small
pinch of ashes that have a direct connection to the first campfire that
Lord Baden-Powell had with his first group of scouts.
We placed this pinch of ashes in a O.A. Ordeal ceremony fire and at the
end of this ordeal each new Ordeal member was given a pinch of the ashes
from this campfire along with an explination of the origins of the
ashes. We then asked the members to take this bit of ash and place it
in there next troop campfire and allow each participant of that campfire
to have his own piece of the fire from Lord Baden-Powell. They then are
asked to continue the fire that lights the way to scouting and life.
The boys and adults seem to get a feeling of history and continuity to
scouts here and around the world.
Even if you don't have ashes from Baden-Powell, you can pass the
campfires from one generation of scouts to the next in a similar fashon
with parts of campfires from your own troop. Have the scouts place it in
a medicine pouch of their own manufacture, like for Leathercraft Merit
Badge, along with other small items of special meaning to that scout.
