A few thoughts on some recent subjects...
Bad Example by adult
AFAIC, I have a far greater problem with the adult's reply to the
Scouts, than I do with the fact that he was smoking at all.
He _could_ have very nicely explained that the policy applied mainly to
the Scouts, and that he had taken steps to follow the policy as aimed at
adults, i.e., trying to find an area where he could smoke without being
observed. Assuming that to be true, of course. :(
As it is, his response has only compounded the problem, and cost him
credibility with the Scouts on JLT.
I agree that there has been a flip-flop in the last several years,
concerning the non-smoking public's tolerance of smokers. IMNSHO, this
is well deserved by the smokers. It has been my experience that
requests to smokers to either not smoke right now, or move the ashtray
to the other side of the desk so that the cigarette isn't in my face,
have been met with a great deal of intolerance and contempt. "As you
sow, so shall you reap". Hmm, wonder who said that? ;)
I had a discussion on this subject recently with a senior Scouter in our
district. He had graciously offered to give me a ride to a meeting, and
on the way, he asked if I minded if he smoked in the car. I replied
that it was _his_ car. His response to that was that it wasn't the
question. I avoided it another time or two, until I was forced to admit
that, yes, cigarette smoke bothered me. So, he waited until we got to
the meeting site to have his smoke.
If _most_ smokers were that considerate, there would not be the anti-
smoking intolerance that we are seeing now. BTW, it's not that I have a
moral objection to smoking, so much that being around even one cigarette
makes my throat feel sore and raw.

Black Forest Cake
Around here, Black Forest cake is chocolate cake with cherry filling,
iced with whipped cream and chocolate flakes, with piles of whipped
cream topped with cherries on top.
A look at one costs about 3 nights at the gym. ;)

SPL after 18
I believe that the rules are clear, that after 18, the boy is no longer
a Scout. However, why is it necessary to have 1 year terms? Unless the
Troop is very small, you will generally have enough boys to handle all
the positions needed.
Just my $0.02 worth.
