I did have a discussion on the birth certificate subject with Canadian
Customs several years ago. They were very clear on the fact that the
certificate must either be an original or a CERTIFIED copy. Photocopies
are not accepted if the birth certificate is required, unless it is a
certified photocopy (you may get certified copies from your county
recorder). Since then, we have crossed the border once each year with no
request for any papers.
