Well, as long as I am already disagreeing with several on the Scouts-L,
I might as well add my "6-bits." The Scouts were wrong! BSA does not say
NO SMOKING for adults, only recommend that they do not smoke around
Scouts. No, as a rule I am not a smoker-but, if you hand me a good
cigar, I just might reconsider. I am shocked by the methods used to
degrade those who do smoke. "Only at this table!" "Not on this bus!"
"Not in this building!" It reminds me of the way that Negroes were
treated when I was a kid. Just ask yourself-would you tolerate a Scout
walking up to an adult & say "no Jews allowed?" It appears to me that
the adult(s) were complying with BSA recommendations. Just think about
it. "White Only," "Colored Only," "Non-Smokers Only." Now, for what I am
about to receive, may God have mercy on my soul.
George,
I am completely appalled at your response. Your smoke, whether it be =
cigarette or cigar, is harmful to my lungs, and I do not have to put up =
with it. How can you compare that to the color of someone's skin or on =
their ethnic background. Discriminating against color or ethnic is =
wrong. Discriminating against smokers is not wrong. It is a safety =
concern. And...when you speak of smoking in front of Scouts and/or =
other youth, it is a moral concern.
Think about what you are saying. From reading the original post, it was =
my belief that the leaders were smoking in view of the Scouts. The =
policy does not say that you cannot smoke at all at a scouting function. =
Smoking is your right. However, it does say that there will be a =
designated smoking area at each and every scouting outing (whether =
district, troop, council, etc.) and that smoking area will NOT be in =
view of Scouts.
"...keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally =
straight...."
YiS,
Marie
