Fellow Scouters
Called DowBrands 1-800-428-4795 again today to see what turmoil
or improvements Scouts-L'rs calls made occur.
Identified myself as a scouter wishing to use "ziploc" bags for
cooking eggs in a pot of boiling water. This kept it simple.
The consumer representative quickly knew that some scout troops use the
FREEZER bags. Certain of the ziploc bags have higher temperature ratings
which include the Freezer bags. They at Dow still do not advise this usage.
One reason they gave was that the plastic starts softening at 195F.
It is safe to use in a microwave following the directions on the package.
Anyway a last note (epilogue) on this subject:
I like the idea it is neat, wonder if it couldn't be done other ways
As an adult in an adult camp out, I might try this idea.
Would have to think further before doing and be very careful to
continually stir. The gentleman that described instant poached egg
when the bag touched the side of the pot indicates to me that he also
melted the plastic at point of contact.
With Scout groups, I will never teach it
The youngest of common scouts (~ 11yr old patrols)
and the wise guy older scouts (~ 15yr old patrols)
Cooking for and by themselves when I am not present Will MELT the plastic.
For Cub Leaders I would also ask not to use this method.
Some day they will be Boy Scouts and copy what you teach.
Again Sorry, it was as the boys would say "cool"
