Troop Equipment

I am the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 9, here in Duluth MN. This will
be my second and last year in this position because I will be turning 18
this August. I will be handing over the position to the next SPL at
summer camp in July.

Our Troop Committee has decided that they would like to have a six month
term period instead of the full year. This is to increase the amount of
scouts who would be in leadership positions. I agree with this but they
also want to change the months of this period also, and I do not think
that is a good idea.
Usually, elections are held in May and the next SPL has a two month
waiting period before he takes over the position. The current period is
one year for being a Senior Patrol Leader in our Troop, from the middle
of July to the middle of July. The committee would like the six month
period to rotate from the middle of May to the middle of November and
back with elections held in May. I, as representing the boys in the
Troop and their best decisions, feel that a *period from the middle of
July (starting at summer camp) and going through the middle of January
then back to the middle of July, with elections still held in May, is a
better leadership term.

The Committee would like to start this rotation May 1997, meaning that I
would have to step down early. I would like to present this proposed SPL
rotation period to the Committee next month, and after talking to my
Scoutmaster he feels the same; but before I do I would like to have some
feedback from you. I am not asking you to agree or disagree with *this
plan but would rather like your opinions. I do care about the Boy Scouts
of America/scouting program and how it influences its members. This is
why I ask for your help in representing Troop 9.

Yours in scouting,
Benjamin J. Daw
