Re: A troubleing OA Election Team Situation - Did we do the

Ed,

I wouldn't be too hard on the SM that asked you to change the results.
As a SM yourself, you know that we are the focus of attention in a Troop
for everything that goes well and especially for everything that goes
wrong. I'm sure I'm not the only SM that sometimes says or does
something I wish I hadn't. And sometimes we upset somebody with
our mistakes. It's easy as the SM to become the target of concerns
of every Scout, parent, District staff, Charter Organization and
anyone else that wants something from your troop. With so much
being asked of us, sometimes it's easier to give in rather than fight
the issue.

The way I was taught in the Army to handle unethical requests is to
put the pressure back on the requester. Restate the request in as
negative a way as possible and ask if that's really what they want
you to do. "Let me get this straight. You want me to lie and to
break the sacred trust between me and my Scouts by falsifying
the election results! Is that what you really want me to do?" Then
encourage the SM to use the same tactic to defend against the
parent that's pressuring him.
