I'm writing you about something I consider just as important as the
Jamboree or Philmont or Pilgrimage.
If you look at page B2 of today's Phialdelphia Inquirer you'll see an
article titled "In-Line skating ban defeated in Souderton". But it is
the subheading that is the key:
"A group of Boy Scouts presented a persuasive argument against the
proposal to council members."
Members of Troop 401 attended the Borough meeting and discussed the
ordinance for more than 40 minutes with the Borough Council and the
Mayor. The Scouts had a plan going into the meeting and they were
respectful, articulate, and tenacious. Their participation, their
presentation was the persuading argument as acknowledged by the
Vice-President of Council.
Quoted in the article is Jake Dollar. This is the same Jake Dollar who
provided the tour for Kristen Sze of Channel 6 news at the Encampment.
T.J. Rissing - quoted in the North Penn Reporter on Tuesday - was the
camp bugler at the encampment.
What it is not stated in the article was this was not just one meeting
that these Scouts attended. It was their third Council meeting and on a
night when they should have been preparing for Winter Camp, they took on
an ordinance they thought was unfair. And won.
If Scouting is about building character, fitness and leadership, I can't
think of a better lesson learned by these Scouts and as an example for
all Scouts. What a lesson as a "Citizen in the Community."
I am sharing this with you as I hope you will be persuaded to forward
this message to all those Scouters on your Jamboree mailing list. These
Boy Scouts made a difference in their community. And I am asking your
help as I want to share that with everyone.
