"surprise" awards

Just a thought for the discussion on "surprise" awards-
I've had the privilege of chairing Silver Beaver and Award of Merit
committees as well as serving as Lodge Adviser and working with the youth
committees of the lodge in selecting Founder's Award and Vigil recipients
.... Luckily a wise old scouter taught me early in my scouting to always
follow-up with either the nominator or a close friend to ensure that the
individual (unknowingly) would get to the ceremony with the appropriate
friends and relatives in attendance. Of course, we must try to make the
experience for the recipient special and hopefully a surprise. My own
personal belief is that the responsibility of the Award recipients and
their friends and family being at the special event should fall under the
chairman of the award committee.
Just a thought...
