In reply to Linda regarding active scouts and leadership and time
committments/constraints.
When a scout becomes a leader in our troop it is an obligation and
committment of responsibility to maintain an active participatory role.
Scouts that want to be leaders in the troop understand this in advance.
Each scout signs a contract in our parent/scout guide book that explains
this committment. To be active means attending 80% of the troop meetings and
the major event each month of active service to meet the time requirement.
The troop meetings are based on the major event, campout, hike etc...and it
is expected he will attend. Failure to attend denotes no credit for that
months active service.
Scouts certainly have other extracirricular activities and combined with
school it can be difficult to manage everything. A scout on a sports team
who doesn't make all the practices and games won't make it to the all-star
game or to play in a championship game. Failure to complete leadership
requirements and scout spirit requirements in our troop means the scout has
made a decision on which priorities are more important to him. That is his
choice and he knows this from when he joined and it is certainly discussed at
each Conference for First Class, Star and Life.
This has worked in our troop. You don't have to make Eagle to benefit from
Scouting, but if you want to earn the Eagle Rank your scout spirit and
leadership count heavily.
