Dear Chaplain Morrison:
In June 1995, I was able to attend the second Akela Calls given by
the Northeast Region. One of the workshops was "A Scout's Duty to
God and Country," presented by Michael Bowman and James Bryant. The
"book" they used to conduct the session was written by them (it
might have been part of a Wood Badge ticket) and has proven
invaluable when my partner and I present "Duty to God and Country"
at our local PowWows. I believe they have since had the book
published by Gillwell Spirit Press. If not, you might be able to
order a copy directly from the authors:
Michael F. Bowman:5832 Valley View Drive, Alexandria, VA 22310-1625
(phone: 703-971-3990)
James Bryant: 2908 Eastside Drive, Alexandria, VA 22306-1713 (phone:
703-765-0557)
The book details the requirements for the awards presented by all
the faiths, including the adult scouter awards. Sample generic
ceremonies are also included, for houses of worships (useful for
Scout Sunday/Sabbath as well as Packs and troops presenting the
religious square knot). The section on duty to country details flag
etiquette, ceremonies, etc.
You may also want to contact the Relationships Division, Boy Scouts
of America, P.O.Box 152079, 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving,
Texas 75015-2079 (phone: 214-580-2000). The Relationships Resources
catalog includes a lot of religious relationships materials which
can be ordered by your local council (some for free, some for a
fee).(It also lists the Community and Labor Relationships materials
they publish!)
The lead time needed to order printed materials from the States may
not help with your current project. But the Bowman and Bryant book
is a definite must-have if you are counseling members of your unit
towards the religious awards.
Good luck!
