Linda:
This is your call.. The time that the boy spends on baseball does not
negate all that he has accomplished in the troop/patrol up to that time.
In our district (Stevens), a couple of the SM's change the meeting times
so that the "jocks" will be able to make practice & the meetings. In
both cases, they are our best troops. When games are played on Friday or
Saturday & the happy campers are away in the woods, the "jocks" as a
rule join the troop/patrol the following morning at the campsite. If you
feel that the lad has not given the full 6 months service, then in
addition to his 3 months served, assign him a project (as per the BOOK)
to make up the difference. Personally, I will always err in favor of the
boy. He was not elected patrol leader by his peers because he was a
slacker-so, it sounds to me that you have a good Scout who is taking
advantage of his youth & opportunities & earning his school's letter. I
could fill pages telling you of the determination of several of our high
school football players who came hiking in the following morning after a
hard played game. The handbook is a guide-you as SM know this lad better
then anyone on the net. If you do as some have suggested & make him pick
either Scouts or sports-say goodbye to a Scout.
