Re: Silver Beaver (DAM)

I must disagree with Alan about letting the recipient know in advance. When
I received the DAM the first of this month, it came as a TOTAL shock to me.
I received this grand honor along with one of my closest and dearest Scouting
friends, but there was one other award to be given out. For reasons unknown
to me, he didn't attend the banquet and he also missed the Roundtable the
following week. He doesn't have a clue, but will get the shock of his life at
Roundtable in March (if he shows up). I'd much rather have it done to me
as a surprise than be notified beforehand.

The experience, in my opinion is the highlight of my Scouting career so far.
A lot of that is due to the fact that Mike and I received it together, but I'd
rather missed it than know that it was going to happen.

Nonetheless, I knew in advance that I was receiving the DAoM because
I had been complaining that they should not move the district dinner
to the conclave weekend! They did anyway, and they tried to pressure
me into coming to the dinner, but I had promised to take the Scouts
to the conclave and I was going to keep my word. They were a bit
miffed and held my plaque for a few months until there was another
district function to present it to me publicly. I didn't mind and I
am proud to wear my knot and represent Herms District.
