A completely different square knot question

I am wondering how various individuals handle a square knot issue:
Once a boy (or adult) completes an award that allows a square knot, and
it has been signed and completed (such as a religious award), do you
allow that person to wear the knot right away, or must they wait for the
award to be formally presented? In my opinion, the award has been earned
and completed (the same is true with some adult training awards) and
signed by all the appropriate people. Why wait for allow the square knot
to be worn, when bureaucratic entanglements can take a long time, some
times?
