Re: GS vs. BS

An alternative to merging, which seems to be often overlooked, is the
BSA giving the Chartering Organizations the authority to choose whether
to have single-sex (male or female) or coed units. This does not
require the pain and anguish merging the two organizations would
(especially since the GSUSA has indicated they do not wish to merge).
There could still be opportunities for troops that wanted to remain the
way they are (single-sex), just more options for those who want to
change.
I'm not saying that this route is without its hardships and perils, but
it seems to make a lot more sense than trying to put together a merger
of two very dissimilar groups. As for the "fear talk" wrt coed camping
that Mary Beth refers to, I don't really see that as an issue.
Exploring has done it for years and Venture crews are permitted to do
it. These are the age groups where the fears would be greatest, and
they have had little problem. Taking 11-yr-old coed groups into the
woods should be a lot less problematic.
To take the thread in a different direction, I wonder if Mary Beth would
elaborate on what ways the Brownie handbook and the Daisy program are
better. Perhaps the BSA can learn from the GSUSA even without mergers.
