Firstly, I would greatly appreciate if somebody would please cross post
this request to UK.rec.scouting, Can.rec.scouting and any other similar
relevant groups on my behalf; my server cannot access these groups.
Two Venturers from my Unit have just completed their Queen's Scout
Awards. For their Queen's Scout badge presentation ceremony, I want to
do a presentation about the Queen's Scout Award, including a little
about the history of the award. Now, here's about as much of the history
as I know:
Sometime in about the 1920s the king at the time (I think is was King
George V) gave Baden-Powell permission to institute a royal award in
scouting; this award was called the King's Scout award and at the time
was the highest award that could be earned by any scout in the British
Commonwealth. In 1946 the Senior Scout section was started for ages 14
to 18, and at this time the Queen's Scout Award became part of the
Senior Scout programme. After the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II
(1952?) the title of the award was changed to Queen's Scout. In
Australia in 1972, the "New Design" of scouting replaced Senior Scouts
with Venturers. As far as I know, in all this time the only change to
the Queen's Scout badge (in Australia at least) has been the size of the
badge and the fact that the current badge omits the words "Boy Scouts"
below the crown that was on the earlier badges. For those not familiar
with the badge, it is roughly pentagonal in shape, with a yellow crown
with red trim embroidered on a dark green background; a picture of the
badge appears on my Venturer page at
http://student.curtin.edu.au/~poneilgdo/venturer.html for those who have
Web access.
What I would like is more detailed and accurate information covering the
above details. If anyone happens to know where there is a photo of BP
with the King, that would be a huge bonus. Now here's the catch; the
presentation will be next Wednesday (12th Feb) so I'll really need any
information by the end of the weekend, so snail-mail is out. Anyone who
can help, I would appreciate replies by email to my address below
(especially those reading this on newsgroups as I cannot access the
newsgroups I indicated above). If you happen to know a book where this
information can be found, please let me know and I can see if it is
available locally.
Thanks in advance...
