Re: 50 Miler Award

Several of us have been discussing the service project associated
with the coveted "50 Miler Award". The intent behind requiring
the service project as part of the award was to instill a
conservation ethic within the crew that was undertaking the 50
mile+ trek (whether by foot or by paddle). It is my
understanding that the project requirement is intended to be part
of the trek experience to help build teamwork and accomplish a
goal as a crew. Those planning treks and seeking the Award
should program a day of service into the schedule. The break
from backpacking or paddling will be welcomed by the crew.

This structure is adhered to at Philmont Scout Reservation and is
perhaps one of the best aspects of a trek. The pride of
accomplishment is a real asset and something the boys take with
them.

While holding a seperate service project does not appear to
violate the rules of the Award, please make certain that the
project meets the objectives of crew unity and conservation.
Let's make certain that our boys "give back" something for the
use of our natural resources.
