I'm working with a bit of ignorance here -- where is the Adirondack Scout
Camp?
When I led canoeing expeditions around the Saranac Lake area with Scout-aged
kids, we always stopped in for a couple of hours at the Adirondack Museum.
It had two things that appealed to our kids. First, it has a wonderful
collection of information about the frontier era, a lot about canoeing, and
camping, and attempts to change the landscape. If you've got a Scout who is
deeply into the conservation badges, this is great. The adventure aspect is
good. And the displays are top-notch.
Second, the museum has an outstanding collection of art, some amazing
examples of the American Luminist school. The kids I took were a collection
of U.S. and international kids, many with great art appreciation. When the
National Gallery of Art in D.C. put together the Luminist show, they must
have cleaned out the Adirondack -- it was interesting years later to see
international critics rave about the great paintings that we always saw on
the way to canoeing.
Plus they had good restrooms, and as I recall, a nice setting. It was a
good, refreshing stop.
Side notes: Cooperstown has another museum open in the summer that includes
the Cardiff Giant, the Farmers Museam. In this age of National Enquiring
minds, it's good to see one of the world's most famous hoaxes all the way
through to exposure -- it build's good skepticism and is an object lesson in
the Scout Law's first point.
And, my wife and I are fond of the return to Baltimore through the Delaware
Water Gap area. We were scouting for canoeing sites, and a trip through the
area provides scenery and a lot of good ideas for shorter trips from
Baltimore.
