Arrow of Light Snub

Mary Beth Murphy (MBScouter@AOL.COM)

To all:

I'm a Webelos 2 leader, and have been lurking on my wife's subscriber list
for a few weeks. I've been a den leader for five years, following my son
through the pack from Tigers on up. This past week my den sponsored an Arrow
of Light ceremony for two of my boys. Their parents and I were very proud of
them becuase they joined in fifth grade, and still were able to complete
their requirements. We held the ceremony during one our pack's regular den
meeting nights, because our Blue and Gold Banquet and crossover ceremony is
next week, and we were running out of time. The boys had just squeaked
through with their Arrow of Light requirements in time. At a leader meeting
a week before I invited the other dens to attend, because I consider it a
pack function and accomplishment, and an inspiration to the younger boys.
The other leaders agreed, said they would attend the ceremony (about 15
minutes to complete), and then begin their regular den meetings for the
remainder of the hour. The Wolf den leader was not present at the leader
meeting, but his assistant was, so the information got back to the leader.
The night of the ceremony, all the den leaders and their boys showed up to
watch our presentation (an impressive one, if I may say so)...except the Wolf
leaders and den. They were having their regular den meeting in another part
of the church. I got upset, and so did the Cubmaster, who had officiated the
ceremony. He went to the Wolf leaders after the ceremony and was told they
thought attendance was optional, and since they had seen a similar ceremony
last year, didn't think it was important to attend. Up until this year, the
leaders of our pack have worked together and supported each other. Normally,
I don't let things like this bother me, but I consider this act a show of
disrespect for the pack leadership, my boys, and me, personally. I don't
know how or if this will be resolved by the pack leadership. My boys and I
are gone after next week anyway. And I'm not really asking for advice,
suggestions, or comments from anyone reading this, I'm just looking for a
chance to vent to other people who may have been in similar situations. I
hope it's not a common occurance in other packs. Anyway, thanks for
listening. I'll return to lurker mode now.

Hoy Murphy
Webelos II Leader -- for one more week.
