I did call, and you do need to be on the mailing list to get current trek
info. You need to have your trek plans made and ready before the call-in
date (which will be on Monday, April 7 at a time to be announced) so you
can minimize your on-line time. The conversations are short, like trek#
and 5 possible start dates and basic contact info.

If you don't get a firm spot for 1998, you can either go on a waiting
list for 1998 (take your chances on a date...) or you can be offered a
firm spot in 1999. You cannot choose both. That means that some number
of the 1998 slots are already gone to late callers from last year... It
is a kind of rough lottery. I don't know last years exact numbers, but
about 18,000 scouts/explorers/leaders pass over Philmont trails every
summer.

Since I was on a trek last summer (which was fantastic) I determined to
try again for '98 or '99. Other possibilities are to contact your
Council about a Council contingent. I'm not sure how that works but
Councils seem to be able to bypass the lottery system, as do foreign
units. There are also spring, fall, and winter trek programs as well as
the Philmont Training Center.

Even if you are just passing by, you should stop in and visit the trading
post!
