Mark,

I don't think any answers were given on the list, although I responded
offline to two or three requests. Here, for your information as well as for
others who may have the same question, is what I know:

Philmont's main switchboard is at (505) 376-2281. Call them to get on the
mailing list for an information packet re: 1998 treks. The information
packet, which is due to be mailed out sometime in late February or early
March, will allow you to plan the trek you want to schedule. Then, on April
1st at a given time, they will begin taking reservations by phone. I don't
recall whether the time is 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. MST, but they will tell
you that when you call for your packet, as well as in the packet itself. On
April 1st at the appointed time, you will need to have your request ready
and be on the phone, prepared to keep redialing until you get through.
Unfortunately, demand for slots at Philmont exceeds supply, so it ends up
being a lottery of sorts, first come, first served.

Now, if anybody reading this gets a slot, and I don't, I'm gonna be sorry
I'm not selfish! Hope to see you all on the trail!!

Yours in Scouting,
