Re: Balooning and Safe Scouting Unapproved Activities in BSA

At Philmont in August 1996 --- at the Expl. training week, this
specific question was raised, as there had been a long tenured
Hot Air balloon post in New Mexico for years, and in 1996 they
were told they had to shut down this activity.

It is indeed in the Guide to Safe Scouting -- as a bold, thou
shalt not --- however, since the National Director of Exploring,
and the National Exploring President were in the room, we wanted
to know how come.

Surprise! It is for insurance reasons. The safety of those young
people and leaders would cost thousands of extra dollars, and that
cost would have to be spread out across the program, and then,
as soon as something happened - watch the media!

It is dangerous to climb a mountain too - and in fact we can die
crossing the yard -- but let's keep a prespecive here - I too
love Hot Air Balooning, and if I take my kids, it my fault if
something happens.
