Balooning and Safe Scouting Unapproved Activities in BSA

>Recently I have noticed several very prominent BSA publications featuring
>activities that are clearly banned in the guide to Safe Scouting. I for one
>love Hot Air Baloons, and the 1997 BSA Supply Division has one on the front
>cover of their catalog but clearly the Guide to Safe Scouting says that Hot
>Air Baloon riding is not approved for even Explorers.

ED-- My thoughts exactly about HOT AIR BALOONING.

I am an Observer at the U.S. Nationals and have been in several
conversations about baloonong in the scouts wanting to form a crew to
learn the sport and to experience the flight. I have many Idea on how to
go about the combination of the two.

We had in fact started a post with the local club, but when the youth
found out that they were not going to be able to ride they quit and so
died the post.

I have even asked if we (pilot and crew) could launch or land in the
various camps in our council and have been told that that would not be
acceptable because of the PROPANE and the beverage that some balooners
use. I tried to explain saftey features and about the toast after and
was told "END OF SUBJECT"

Ed, where are you from?
Do you participate in the Nationals?
Ever attend an event in Ohio?
details... Please.
