Therm-a-rest vs. other brands ?

Hi there,

I haven't posted anything to the list in a couple of months, but I have been busy with courses and weekends away with the cubs.

Anyway, last June/July most of the leaders in my pack purchased therm-a-rests after the Cuboree held at Lough Dan in Wicklow. I have a 3/4 lenght Lite, and have found it far better then any other mat I have ever used. Even one I have made of of 1 inch thick foam.

The plus factors to myself and the other leaders are:

1. The therm-a-rest can pack up very small, and is quite light.

2. The Therm-a-rest is very strong, and can be easily repaired if damaged. (repair kits can be purchased in most camping shops here)

3. The self-inflating system means there is no need to bring a foot pump on a hike/camp, and also ends the time old tradition of sitting around the camp fire blowing up the air-beds

4. The mat provides good insulation against the ground, (which can be very cold and hard in Ireland, even during the summer)

5. I have found that the therm-a-rest provides a great sleep, just like your own bed, mainly due to the fact you can alter the hardness of the mat by adding/ reducing the amount of air in the mat.

I would recommend the Ther-a-rest to anyone who no longer belives in *roughing it*, it is definitely well worth the money.
