In yesterday's digest, Alan Houser brought up the continuing problem
of line lengths and Paul Wolf mentioned the HTML and base64 encoding.
I have given up trying to get the line length problem solved, after
running into problems with Juno and Netscape. On Juno, I have carefully
formatted a message, only to find it next to unreadable when posted.
The problems is that Bill Gates and Microsoft, with their attitude
toward application programs and "fatware" (memory hogging software),
have created a problem that is almost impossible to fix. The problem
seem to be related to the TrueType proportional fonts, and the program
ignoring sent CRs.
As for the base64, or Mime, encoding - if you suspect that you might be
one of those who is posting encoded messages (these are usually messages
written off-line, and attached to the email message), then mail the
message to only yourself. When you receive it, then forward the received
message to the list. That is the easiest way of decoding this stuff that
I know of.
I will agree with Paul's admonition against copying the entire message
that you are referencing. Don't do that.
