Dear Victor,
The series of books is by Fitzgerald (I don't have his first name in
the old grey matter right now, I think it is John)). The first book is
called "The Great Brain", the others are "The Great Brain Strikes Again" and
so on... The Brain is the older brother (the younger one tells the story)
and he is a great inventor and entrepeneur. Takes place at the turn of the
century...the toilet episode is hilarious! Great family values, historically
accurate, and well-told stories! They are readily available in paperback
and all children's libraries (public and in schools) should have them, as
well as bookstores with juvenile fiction. Reading level is about 5th grade
or so. They are great books and I loved reading them to my 4th graders,
years ago. My 6th grader has read them all 4-5 times each (I know he has
some copies in his room, but I'd rather not go in there without
reinforcements and toxic waste gear).
If you liked those, try Farley Mowat's books, "The Dog That Wouldn't Be",
and "Owls in the Family". Fantastically funny read-a-louds about a boy
growing up in the wilds of Sascatchewan, Canada, and his rather
unconventional family. Mowat also wrote "Never Cry Wolf", "A Whale For
tthe Killing", and "The Boat That Wouldn't Float", among many others.
"Lost in the Barrens" is a fantastic survival story for young men/boys to
read. Many Scouting-type themes in these books. Mowat was (is?) banned
from Canadian publishers for his rather radical (read "truthful") portrayal
of the Canadian gvt. and fishing industries.
Another favorite is "Rascal", by Sterling North. About a motherless boy who
gets a raccoon for a pet . Takes place during WW II. I have worn that
book out.
