RE: Invitations to Webelos to visit Troops
The relationship(s) between Cub Packs and Boy Scout Troops should be
encouraged at multiple levels.
The Roundtable is an excellent place to learn about the potential contacts
the Packs and Troops. Our District Roundtable Commish sets aside a session
specifically for this purpose in November.
Sessions are first held separately on topics related to the relationship.
They include: Use of Boy Scouts to assist at Cubbing activities (Pinewood
Derby, Whooporees, Day and Resident Camps, Tiger Time, Round-up,
Cross-over, Arrow of Light Ceremony, ...); Recruitment, Training,
and Appropriate Use of Den Chiefs; Webelos/Troop Campouts and other
joint activities; Webelos attendance at Boy Scout Camporees; Pow Wow; Cub
Leader Training; Boy Scout Adult Leader Training.
The Webelos Leaders then come to the Boy Scout Roundtable meeting where they
mingle with the Boy Scout Scoutmasters and other Leaders (many Troops have
an Assistant Scoutmaster who functions as Webelos Liaison) This is where
Troops and Webelos Dens can directly arrange all sorts of future contacts
face-to-face and exchange any written materials they have developed.
Our District has discouraged developing the attitude that Webelos from
specific units "belong" to particular Troops.
A healthy, vigorous, relationship between Webelos and Boy Scouts benefits
all parties... especially the Boys. That relationship should be curried and
fostered year-round.
Please have the attitude, Webelos Leaders, that the Arrow of Light Ceremony
should be the *beginning* of a new Scouting experience and build up to that
point rather than letting down to an "ending". Boy Scout Leaders: Take the
lead! Remember that the vast majority of the Webelos leaders are coming into
this with little prior experience with the Webelos/Boy Scout interface.
