There are manufacturers that make packs, and hip-belts, to fit kids. I
would recommend this over any kind of too-large pack, however padded or
otherwise made to fit. My personnel favorite is a company called Mont
Bell. Their packs are pricey, but the design and quality is outstanding. I
bought
my son one at age 11 that will adjust and should keep him going until he
makes eagle.
