The best backpack is one that fits. The biggest problem I have seen is that the
smallest boys can't get the hip belt small enough to do it's job. If not pad it
o or make it amaller some other way. One recommendatin that seems to work is to
borrow or rent several to see which one the boy likes best. My troop often has
access to a "spare" from one of the families that has outgrown a pack.
My choice was the Kelty Super Tioga, it fits me great and my large 14 year old
son uses the Tioga, same frame - smaller pack. I got a great deal from Campmor.
REI also has used packs for sale if you are lucky enough to visit on the day
thay are put out for sale. The only fault I noticed was that the frame was
scraped, like after it has had some use. If you start looking soon enough there
are some great deals, including contacting the council and districts to see if
anyone has a used pack available for use or sale.
